Dress code
There is no strict dress code for our wedding. We recommend "semi-formal" attire, which refers to that liminal space between casual and black-tie. Of course, wear what you think makes you look good (there will be lots of pictures being taken).Travel and lodging
For out-of-town guests, San Diego International Airport (SAN) is the major airport to use. Depending on how you want to spend your visit, there are a number of good options for lodging. The wedding venue is in Chula Vista, which is about 8 miles south of downtown San Diego and about 10 miles south of San Diego International Airport. Chula Vista has a quaint downtown area, but is not the best option for tourist activities / beach access. To maximize your proximity to the wedding, the following hotels in Chula Vista are very close:- Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel is a 7 min drive/3.5 miles away from the wedding venue. It has 149 rooms and 24 suites, and so is a good option for guests looking to stay together. There is a discounted rate at this place. Reach out to the manager Denise Halliwell at dhalliwell@bwmarinagateway.com and let her know you are with the Lewis party.
- El Primero is a small historic hotel with minimal amenities.
- The Rambler Motel is a 5 min drive, 1.5 miles away from the wedding venue.
The downtown San Diego area (including Little Italy and the Gaslamp District) is a convenient option for its proximity to the airport (2 miles) and has access to good restaurants and fun tourist activities. It is also quite close to Chula Vista and the wedding venue. Here are the top 10 ("best value") hotels in downtown San Diego according to TripAdvisor:
- Embassy Suites Downtown San Diego
- Urban Boutique Hotel in Little Italy
- Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter
- The Bristol Hotel San Diego
- The Sofia Hotel
- The Hyatt
- Marriott
- InterContinental San Diego
- Pendry
- Courtyard by Marriott
North Park is also a great option, as it is about ten minutes from the airport by car and has a lot of great restaurants in a walkable area. The Lafayette Hotel is an historic hotel that was recently renovated. It is also quite near where Mimi and Hunter used to live.
For a beach/ocean oriented visit, Pacific Beach and La Jolla are two good areas. Both will be around 20 minutes from the airport and around a 30 minute drive to the wedding venue. Pacific Beach has a party scene, lots of bars, and a nice boardwalk area and lots of restaurants. La Jolla is a fancier area and offers higher end restaurants and beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. We will point out that the Pacifc Ocean temperature in March is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. For Pacific Beach, an example hotel close to the beach and boardwalk is the Pacific Terrace Hotel, though there are a lot of options and frankly we do not know which are better than others. In La Jolla, the Grand Colonial Hotel is a four-star hotel and is in a nice location in downtown La Jolla.
Fun things to do
- The ocean will be cold (60 F). You will likely not want to swim unless you enjoy a nice shock to your system. Sport fishing is a fun activity (there are some businesses that can be chartered out of Point Loma). Whale watching is another fun option.
- La Jolla is a nice place to visit. The Museum of Contemporary Art is a very nice art museum. It is also very fun to go to the cliff above Children's Pool beach to watch the seals and enjoy the sea breeze.
- Balboa park is home to a lot of different museums, as well as San Diego's world class zoo. They have pretty much all the animals at the zoo. Admission is around $70 dollars to the zoo. A more budget friendly option is the model train museum, though the $20 admission is still steep in my opinion. Balboa Park also has some art museums, as well as a small free art museum (Timken museum) with some famous paintings in it. Shoutout Fleet Science Center where wedding invitee Andrew works! They have a planetarium.
- Top 3 restaurants (awarded by mimiandhunterforever.com) are
- Bahn Thai (takeout only)
- Taco Stand (multiple locations). Confusingly, it is the name of a taco /burrito restaurant, not a taco stand.
- Bronx Pizza is a cash only pizza spot. Pretty good.
- Convoy Street is home to a large number of Asian restaurants, including Korean barbecue, sushi, lots of fusion spots and more. Here is an Eater map to the area for your convenience.
Registry / gifts
Your presence is the precious gift we request.
For the giving-inclined guests, Mimi and Hunter must inform you of an anticipated intercontinental move in the near future. Alas! Material goods would only be a burden at this juncture.
Fear not! We are planning a weeklong honeymoon for the summer of 2025 in the Pacific Northwest.
In lieu of material gifts, we will be accepting cash gifts (digitally via Venmo or Paypal) or checks / cash at the wedding explicitly earmarked for our vacation and sorted into three tiers.
- Bronze tier $20 - $50. Givers in the bronze tier are guaranteed one postcard from our honeymoon destination, hand-signed and addressed by the newlyweds.
- Silver tier $50 - $100. In addition to the postcard, gives in the silver tier will get a dedicated toast (photographed and shared digitally).
- Gold tier $100+. Givers in the gold tier receive a postcard, a toast, and a surprise gift from our travels.
What's for dinner?
- Tacos (carne asada, chicken, al pastor) as well as vegan/vegetarian options
- Variety of appetizers
- Rice and beans
- Churro bites (mmm!), flan, and other tasty treats
- The venue permits beer and wine only, but there will be plenty.
